So these are M51 from imaging data captured by rob-scopes for me and Orion from their sample dataset (Ignore the strange digital artefacts on M51).

Can I use the 4 channels of colour data (RGB and HA) in the Orion data to colourise the image?

Opinions and feedback welcome. Using ASTAP for stacking and Pixelmator for adjustments.

Hi NewSteve ,

That was quick! Two images already. :)

Yes you can add the red green and blue channels to make a colour image of the Horsehead nebula in Orion. Don't concern yourself if the colours should look a bit odd at first attempt, maybe they won't, it probably only happens to me. Regarding the Andromeda galaxy, M31, there's only another 100 odd in the Messier catalogue, and I only remember a handful at the best of times! M51 as you'll soon learn is the Whirlpool galaxy. I had a quick look at the software I believe you use to calibrate etc. In the 'Stack Method Tab' tick the 'Convert OSC images to colour' box. Just try each one of the Bayer patterns in turn and apparently it should show you the result. If it mentions each pattern, then you can directly select RGGB.

I hope that helps a bit, and more to the point that it works. Maybe you'd then post the colour image.

Cheers,
Ray

Thanks Ray,

I had all the images (R, G ,B and HA) selected for stacking so I don’t know where the colour went. I’ll have another look.

Hi Steve,

It mentions check-marking the 'classify-by-filter'. There appears to be a set of boxes near the bottom of the Stack menu. Have you put a tick in the 'Image filer' box? If you have, or, if you do but it doesn't work let us know.

Cheers,

Ray

Thanks Ray,

That did the trick. This is over-processed but it was a quick 2-minute job after re-stacking.

Steve

Steve,

That's great and you carried it out in no time at all. In most instances the initial colours are out, but there are plenty of ways to correct this. At least you have an image to play around with. Did the debayer of the Andromeda galaxy not work, or maybe you haven't yet got around to it. Tackling one image at a time is not a bad idea anyway. Perhaps we may hear more tomorrow, or if it is already tomorrow when you're reading this, then today. :)

Wow, that made a difference :) and going forward of course you'll work out "how you like" to process :)

A nice image in either case!
