I have been thinking behind the scenes of adding one of these new filters to Pier 11 to try as Pseudo narrowband with OSC using perhaps something like a Dual, tri or Quad band and maybe adding Luminence pro also

I has been asked for it in the past by a couple of members so thought I would check on the forum before spending cash on something that wont get used

Steve

Hi Steve,

I'd make use of one for sure. Is one vote enough to convince you?

Cheers,

Ray

Hi Steve,

I don't think I'll be using Pier 11 anytime soon.

But I would like to see such filters for Pier 5 as well.

Regards

Hi Steve,

I am favour and I vote yes. Actually, I was thinking of asking you about this. On my backyard rig, I use the optolong L-Pro and L-eXtreme extensively. I just got an L-eNhance and will be testing it soon to see how it best fits into my data capture flow.
I have also used L-eXtreme on galaxies, and obtained really good data.
we can discuss at some stage.
Kind regards

Morning & thanks for the feedback so far everyone :)

I did consider Pier 5 but knowing that that particular corrector suffers from reflection issues with filters i decided against it completely on that system I am afraid. If we do it it will be Pier-11

I will have a think about which filters may work best for all of us

Dear Steve,

indeed, it is good to think about which filters would work best on Pier 11. I do not have enough experience to help selecting between manufacturers. However, I can share some thoughts on the two Optolong filters I have been using so far. I image with a f/2.2 at home (Celestron 9.25 EdgeHD, Hyperstar 4, FL=516mm), I must say that the corner stars can get a bit of color decomposition. This is not the case in the center of the image. This is what one would expect with this filter at f/2.2. Given the focal ratio of Pier 11, I think this phenomenon could be less pronounced, at least from what I am reading on the web. Some images are attached to give you an idea of what I am talking about.

The L-pro filter does not cause this, but can cause a number of reflections, especially in the blue. A somewhat funny occurrence is the image I posted on the Witch Head nebula: The cold light of Rigel shining on the Witch ( Manuel Peitsch ) - AstroBin. I do however encounter such reflections (far see less dramatic) in instances where a bright star is in or very near the FOV. This may of course again be a side-effect of using f/2.2 ... but am not sure.

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Manuel

As always Manuel thank you for your very helpful answers and details :)

I will expand, on my previous repsonse now seeing as we are getting into the minutia of it all. My prefered brand with b Hutech/Idas as from experience despsite the extra cost they have a much better figure than all the other brands and also tend to suffer with far less halos

I do have on order to try an Antilia filter as it happens but I would prefer Idas as they do a greater range

Cheers

... This is what I have been reading as well. So this is great, and I might "upgrade" at home as well.

Considering these:

IDAS NGS1 Night Glow Suppression Filter (for general use as its a dark site anyway)

IDAS NBZ Nebula Boost Filter (for the HA OIII)

IDAS H-alpha Enhanced UV/IR Blocking Filter (well because it sounds fun)

You may ask why have the general filter in place, 2.5mm glass thickness add a lot of steps to filter offsets if you should with or without filter

... Indeed, the better ones, especially for the lower focal ratios! Curves look really good!

https://www.365astronomy.com/antlia-alp-t-gold-dual-band-5nm-filter-2-high-speed-version-for-f-2.2-to-f-3.6?search=antlia

This filter looks interesting I have to say, I just wish they would also add Luminance pro/skyglow type filter to their range for broadband but hey ho. you cannot have everything now can you :)

Indeed, looks very interesting, especially for fast systems. How to choose? is the question...
